Planet Math Math+A+Thon
November 2019 - March 2020
What is Math+A+Thon?
RG Kids and Planet Math have put their heads together to create a five-month-long event focusing on encouraging Math education. The goal is to visit all of Bermuda's primary and middle schools (28 total) and deliver an hour-long Math-directed event. These events will take place between November 2019 and March 2020.
How does it work?
Each school will select 12 students to participate. These 12 students will be divided into two teams of six. The teams of six will be comprised of two children from three different age groups, 5-7 years, 8-10 years, and 11-12 years.
The Math+A+Thon will be an hour-long special assembly where questions will be asked to each of the 12 children and points will be tallied by an Event Official. Please note, none of the children will "fail." In the case that a student has any difficulty answering a question, "Math Man" will come to the rescue and provide them with assistance. The goal is to ensure that the participating children and those in the audience are learning and feel supported.
Each of the 12 children will "win" and will receive a prize from the Event Organizers, which will be a collection of items from RG Kids, Planet Math, and supporting sponsors.
How does my school benefit?
RG Kids and Planet Math have created this event to encourage Mathematics while also helping special students that could benefit from additional tutoring. Each school that participates will receive a minimum of 8 sessions of private tutoring with a Planet Math tutor for FREE. Each school will determine the beneficiary and will contact Planet Math with the student's name and contact information. In addition, the winning students will be featured in the Spring publication of RG Kids (April 2020), which means if a child from your school wins, it will be great publicity for your institution.

"I just want to say a huge thank you for a wonderful event! If the goal was inspiring students to see the fun in math, the goal was definitely exceeded.
I have received numerous emails from teachers expressing their excitement for the event but also for what your organization is doing for the community.
We appreciate you!"
Middle School Maths Teacher
"Kindly accept this note of thanks for hosting such a wonderful Mathematics event yesterday, Wednesday, February 5, 2020, at MSA, where students from Grade(s) 6, 7 and 8 (Middle School) competed in the event. The students were talking about the event during my math lessons afterwards, saying what a great time they had watching it. They talked about some of the questions which were asked and held discussions about ways that some of the questions could be answered. That was powerful!
I must also tell you that they absolutely loved the Mascot – Math Man. They asked me If I knew him and if I could ask him to come to visit the Middle School classrooms while we are doing math (dressed in full costume!). Actually, as I was teaching math yesterday afternoon and would ask the students different questions, if a student hesitated to answer, the rest would shout would shout (not loud) “call Math Man!”
They really enjoyed his enthusiasm, encouragement and just the fact that he engaged them by interacting with them as they sat in the audience. Tell him I said he is a big hit with my Middle Schoolers!
Again thank you for hosting such an awesome event. Wishing you every success as you visit each school."

"I just want to extend my congratulations on your awesome success in our community. I have seen videos posted by very proud parents on Facebook of their children participating in the Math-a-thons. This morning’s radio interview on Ocean 89 was so interesting to hear and kept me wanting to hear more. Kevin, your clarity about the mission of Planet Math was great and easy to remember and thank you for the reminder about your upcoming camp.
Anyway, I could go on and on about how impressive you both are and about how Planet Math is a valuable asset in our local community, but then this email would be quite lengthy 😊.
All the best for your continued success!"
